What is OTA HOUSE

A Chronicle of Cultural Enlightenment

The Ajina district of Himeji City, where trade once thrived through water transportation on the Ibo River, still retains the prosperous streetscape from that era.

From Meiji to Taisho, still with remnants of agricultural culture,
From Showa, a period that experienced rapid westernization and industrialization which shaped itself as its own unique culture, In periods like these, Mr. Katsuharu Ota, who ran a soy sauce wholesale business in this port town ventured into manufacturing the symbol of Western culture, shell buttons, and with his own aesthetic sense and imagination, under his own direction, he sublimated his store into a magnificent residence.

A Return to the Cultured Roots

100 years later, in the present day, in this residence that still bears traces of agriculture, We return from the highly industrialized society to the education and culture of the past. In this space, the West and the East, agriculture and industry coexist transcending time and space. The values inherent in agriculture meet modern materials and means, Creating new value here, and now.

That is what the OTA HOUSE is.

A waka poem composed by Emperor Meiji when he visited the Ota House
